Overview:

Join the Associated Press for a one-hour webinar on Thursday, September 12 at 1 p.m. EDT on AI and down-ballot elections. This is the third edition of a series of webinars supported by the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation on how to cover AI across every beat.

Our discussion will include AP reporting of the 2022 mayoral race in Shreveport, Louisiana, where the incumbent mayor faced an AI-driven deepfake attack ad. AP reporters Ali Swenson and Dan Merica will explore how AI is reshaping the political landscape locally, especially in smaller races where resources are limited. AP’s Beatrice Dupuy, who works on the verification team, will share some common tells of manipulated and generative AI content.

The session will include time for audience questions.

Presenters include:

  • Dan Merica, investigative reporter, Associated Press

  • Ali Swenson, national political reporter, Associated Press

  • Beatrice Dupuy, newsgathering producer, Associated Press
