Program

Week 1: Introduction to AI

June 4, 2025 | 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. EDT

Session 1: AI from the ground up

Feeling like you’re already behind on understanding AI? We’ll catch you up in this introduction to the course. Bring your questions and find out what the latest tools can accomplish – and what they can’t.

Speaker

Aimee Rinehart, senior product manager AI strategy, The Associated Press

Session 2: Work smarter. Supercharge your day with integrated AI tools.

AI isn’t just hype—it’s embedded, intelligent and accelerating how we get things done. Zoom auto-generates your meeting recaps. ChatGPT streamlines research in real time. Microsoft Copilot turns raw data into insights on demand. These aren’t just tools—they’re your digital co-pilots. In this session, we’ll decode the AI baked into your favorite platforms, explore where it excels (and where it doesn’t) and show you how to harness it for maximum impact.

Speaker

Tim Mills, director of enterprise collaboration and productivity, The Associated Press

Week 2: Tools and Use Cases

June 11, 2025 | 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. EDT

Session 1: AI tools that optimize work tasks

Join us for an overview of accessible, generative AI tools that include chatbots, if this then that, and others that can streamline tasks and improve performance.

Speaker

Adriana Lacy, award-winning journalist and consultant; CEO, Adriana Lacy Consulting

Session 2: An introduction to “vibe coding” writing code one prompt at a time

Have you ever had a problem you knew could be solved with software if only you knew how to write code? What if you could just speak your idea into existence? Welcome to “vibe coding” where plain language prompts turn into working applications. AP’s Jason Smith – who is not a software developer – shares his own experiences with this new method of coding. The session includes a live demonstration and ideas for where to start experimenting on your own.

Speaker

Jason Smith, director of customer impact, workflow solutions, The Associated Press

Week 3: Understanding the Good and the Bad With AI

June 18, 2025 | 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. EDT

Session 1: How to preserve original content in the age of AI

The Associated Press photo team places 3,000 original photos across the newswire every day. Learn from the insights, checks and tools the AP uses to ensure images are not produced or manipulated with generative AI. Find out how the AP defines its photo guidelines and makes them transparent. Learn how intense color saturation of AI-generated images is influencing how we see the world.

Speaker

Aaron Jackson, deputy director of photography, The Associated Press

Session 2: AI and news: A look at AP’s Local News Initiative and what’s ahead

AP’s local news initiative has built tools and trained newsrooms about AI in the past three years. Find out how that work has shifted over time and what’s ahead for news and AI.
