Week 1: January 21, 2027

What We Talk About When We Talk about AI

Let’s start at the beginning: This session delves into what “AI” actually means (hint: it’s not all ChatGPT and Claude). We’ll cover everything that we mean when we say “AI,” how AI has been implemented in the industry successfully in the past (workflow, rights management, big data processing), and how publishing companies and individuals are using AI now. We’ll review the positive impact of AI on the industry and leave you with ideas and considerations for using AI in your work.

Week 2: January 28, 2027

Beyond the Headlines: Protections, Security, and the Realities of AI in Publishing

There is a lot of hype around the dangers of AI use in the industry. This session will explore both the real dangers and the knee-jerk reactions to technology that you should be aware of. We’ll cover basic protection and security suggestions and we’ll look at a framework for developing a company-wide AI policy for internal and external use. You’ll walk away with a framework template you can use as a starting point for your policy guidelines to make sure your company is using this technology thoughtfully and with the proper safety protocols.

Week 3: February 4, 2027

How to Use AI in Your Workflow

In this overview of workflows for various projects, we’ll share recommendations and case studies for getting started with using effective AI tools in your organization.

  • Strategic Projects: Using AI to flesh out and outline your initial assumptions, organize data sets or map out creative ideas and test them in the marketplace

  • Organizational Projects: Ways to save time, build systems, manage huge data sets

  • Editorial Projects: Research, verification, outlining, copy checks

  • Marketing and Publicity Projects: Building reports, audience research, outreach, timing

Week 4: February 11, 2027

How to Feel Confident Using AI While Ensuring You’re Not Ruining the World, Breaking Copyright, or Compromising Your IP

While exercising caution is required when using AI in publishing, it’s also important to stay on top of the tools and capabilities that exist in AI – and that requires experimentation. This session will highlight successful use cases across the industry as examples, with prompts that you can use as you experiment with tools for personal projects (like developing a personal reading list books or planning travel). But it will also caution that just because you can use AI for something doesn’t mean you should. Before using AI for a publishing-related project, think about what the purpose is and any possible piracy, copyright violations, etc. might stem from using it. We’ll walk through a checklist of things to think about when using AI.
